CollegeBoard SAT Physics Study Guide PT1 Q3

3) This question prompts us to use estimation to approximate which situation will launch the object furthest in the x-direction. To solve this we just need a general understanding on kinematics. As long as gravity is the only force acting on the object, the theoretical furthest x-displacement is produced by an angle 45 degrees above the horizontal.

So furthest x-displacement from these situations should be produced by the angle closest to 45. We can instantly cross out choice C and D because they are going to be launched downward, which will reduce the time in air and decrease the horizontal displacement.

Both Choice A and B seem to be the same amount away from 45 degrees. However, there is one exception to this rule. When the velocity is directly upward, there is no horizontal component of velocity, so it will not travel any horizontal distance at all. For this reason Choice B must be incorrect and Choice A is correct.
