PhysicsBowl 2018 Q12

12) For this question, we need to find the equivalent resistance of the circuit given in the question.

Where R is resistance

This is a series circuit, with a pair of resistors in parallel within that series. With circuits, to find the equivalent resistance we want to work from inside to outside until we are left with one equivalent resistor. So, we will first solve the equivalent resistance from the parallel resistors R[2] and R[3].

Where R is resistance

After finding the equivalent resistance of R[2] and R[3], we are left with three resistors all in series. Again, working to simplify the circuit, we can find the equivalent resistance of these 3.

Where R is resistance

After this, we are left with one equivalent resistor, so we can't simplify the circuit any further. R[1, 2, 3, 4, 5] is the equivalent resistance of the circuit.
