PhysicsBowl 2018 Q4

4) This question asks us to find the final speed of a projectile under the influence of Earth's gravitational field. There are multiple ways to approach this problem.

Where v is velocity, h is height, a is acceleration, and g is acceleration due to gravity

Kinematics:

Considering that we want to find the final velocity, we can decide on and solve a kinematic equation that has all our given and unknown values.

Where v is velocity, h is height, and a is acceleration

Energy:

Using the conservation of energy is another method we can use to solve this question.

Where m is mass, v is velocity, and g is acceleration of gravity

It is important to note that when we are dealing with mechanical energy, we don't need to consider the direction of vector components like velocity and acceleration. In this question, we dropped the negatives and only used the magnitude of the initial velocity and the acceleration of gravity.

In this solution, we looked at both kinematics and energy conversation to solve this question.
