Princeton Review 16th Edition PT1 Q15

15) This question asks us about the momentum of the blocks. We are given a system of 2 blocks. The 4kg block is moving to the right with a velocity of 8m/s. The 2nd block is of mass m and is at rest(initial velocity is zero). Due to the law of conservation of momentum, we can tell that the momentum of the system must be conserved. This means, that the total momentum of the system before the collision, will be equal to the total momentum of the collision after the system.

Where p is total momentum

From here we should split the total initial momentum into its separate components. However, we do not want to do this for the total final momentum because we are trying to solve for that.

Where p is momentum, m is mass, and v is velocity

Now, we can equate the above equation to the total final momentum and plug in values to solve.

Answer: E
